I'd have to agree to the line:

"it’s the first thing to look at, not the only thing to look at"

If you wanna sell your doughnut, you better show people you eat it, rather than feeding people on something that your gag reflex cant take. I think its a metaphor everyone can agree on.

When you market something, make it at least credible.

Ahm..about putting telephone numbers, I am also asking my self about that. Many people usually put contact number wherein most of the time it is something not given value by people. They prefer to just visit websites.

Yes Igor, I have wondered whether paid links are really effective and so far not bothered with them. Reciprocal linking is hard work trying to find partners who a) respond b) add the link correctly and c) retain the link. Writing good artciles is actually hard work. When I write an article I take at least a day studying keywords, a day or two investigating the subject, a day writing a draft and a final day writing the artcile on a web page. But hopefully that effort will pay off in the long run.

Michael ... great example. That's the problem with business owners. They (we) are so in love with our business and well, the ego (have to have one to decide to be a boss) that we forget that it might not be so interesting to other people. Hence talking about the benefit for others that your product brings instead of going over a list of achievements will bring more business.

Chasing after every customer

Thanks for quoting me in that piece. The logic of applying psychology to your marketing is based on the question I've asked for twenty years, "Who buys this stuff." So, who buys your products or services - and why. The answer to those two questions will give you just about all the information you need to conduct highly targeted marketing.

Try this, as an experiment, write a bio for yourself. Limit it to 70 words. You have a choice. You can write it to reflect what you've done in your career. Or you can write it to attract people. If you opt for the latter, you have to ask, "What do they want?" Bingo. Now you're starting to think like a psychological marketer.

Nice opening line but if you're cold calling people to sell sem services that seems a tough way to go and you really don't know what you're doing. This field is way overcrowded and many don't really know what they're doing. That's why the fail, even if they are ethical.

Igor -

I was more surprised that they'd assume you knew what an SEO/SEM was! I've heard "hello, we're an ethical replacement window" company too many times to actually *hear* it anymore. :-)

We're coming out with a product for SEO/SEM folks to use and we seem to spend around 50% of our time figuring out how it could be mis-used or gamed.

So maybe we're just too close to the industry.
