Search Engine Optimization = Marketing ? Why the Hell are we fighting them?
By Igor Mordkovich on May 16, 2006 in SEO
Think about it …… they (Search Engines) can’t succeed if they don’t produce quality results for people and we, site owners and marketers can’t succeed if we don’t show quality to the visitor … so why are we so worried about search engines when the ones we should be pleasing are the visitors?
Isn’t it common sense when SEO companies tell you to build content for search engines, get links, produce tools for others to use and link to you…? I mean this should not be called SEO (search engine optimization). It’s plain MARKETING ! (Note: there are exceptions such as clean code, clean navigation…things that only SE see.)
You don’t get it?
“Build content for SE” …… if you want people to trust you, you have to educate them, so what you should do is educate people (write information for people), not for search engines.
“Get links” …. well, sure, if your stuff is good, others will link to you.
4 days ago I changed the industry word to a word our visitors use and made it a link pointing to more info on our site. Does this sound like an SEO technique? NO! It’s a Marketing / Usability technique. Guess what … in 4 days Yahoo moved the site from Page 4 (36) to Page 1 (2nd spot).
This is not a trick … this is marketing.
Search Engines want to point traffic to quality sites. Websites want to be of value to the visitor in order to convert. So why do we, site owners try to please search engines, when the ones we should please are the visitors?
You can quote me on that ! ![]()
