Business / Marketing Wisdom; Where to get it?

We’re all eager to learn. This is why we read blogs, subscribe to magazines, buy books from our Wish List on Amazon. My amazon wish list has over 85 books right now. My birthday is September 2nd. ;-)

Anyway.

It’s great that we want to learn more and in my opinion this is what drives our brain to work more. But, where do you get your knowledge for business and marketing? ……Books? Magazines? Blogs?

Unfortunately there is a lot of “repeated” content around that just wastes time. You read a book and most of the times you see that it’s a compilation of what you read before in multiple other books, indirect advertising of companies or just fluff. Magazines? A lot of advertising there about companies (as if they try to teach something) and repeated content.

I read books that are best sellers and at the end of the book I realize that this is mostly a motivation speech as at the end of the book you’re now motivated ….. and that’s it. Rarely will you find ideas and strategies that are there to take and use.

Don’t get me wrong. Books, magazines and blogs are the things I read every day. If it would all be a waste of time, I would stop. But the best business related wisdom you can learn is from 2 sources.

1. Influential business people you meet.

2. Your own mistakes and accomplishments.

I actually enjoy the first one. You know there are people that waste your time when they speak and there are people that give you wisdom with every word that comes out of their mouth. It’s great to listen, but be selective of who you listen to. Don’t let fluff waste your time.

So where does your knowledge come from?

  1. I like reading books on leadership… John Maxwell in particular, but I’m not partial to just him. I’ve read a handful of SEO books, but the problem is the get dated so fast.

  2. I actually had a handful of people recommend Maxwell, but I’ll admit that I’ve never read his books.

Problem is … 8 out of 10 times, those books and audio seminars are all “motivation”. Motivation is good, but being motivated is only one part of many that go into being successful.

  3. Maxwell isn’t necessarily a motivator… his books are laden with tips, how-to’s etc. He’s applicable, not a cheerleader. I’m just finished reading 21 indispensable qualities of a leader. Excellent info and all very applicable.
