Dentists are Lousy Marketers
By Igor Mordkovich on Aug 10, 2007 in Marketing Strategy, General, Traditional Marketing
What this post is about can completely apply to your internet marketing strategy, so read on and don’t jump.
Why is it that every time I see a dentist TV ad they have a person sitting in the examiner chair with their mouth wide open and 20 things sticking out of it … oh and a smiling dentist looking at the camera?
I’ll tell you why.
It’s because that is the image that the dentist likes. A patient in his chair doing the complicated (expensive) work. This ad would work if it was an ad for teaching dentists on how to get patients in their doors. The ad however is less effective if it’s targeted towards new patients. Why?
Because the image that the dentist is trying to showcase does not connect with the patient.
This is why Dentists are NOT marketers.
As a marketer, you have to be able to take off your own shoes and put on the shoes of your customer. Imagine what would interest them, what would motivate them, what would make them come to you. If you think that seeing someone in a dental chair with their mouth open and 20 metal things sticking out of it would look appealing to your target audience … well, you are pretty much stuck on your self.
Hey … internet marketer with a website. Are you making the same mistake? Focusing too much on what YOU want instead of what the customer wants? Always remember the dentist ads.

Great post, you make an excelent point here. I’ll be commenting about it in a future blog later this month.
Do you have a trackback link btw?

Great points are brought up in this blog. One only has to look at advertisements on page 25 of various local newspaper advertisements to see how many dentists are lacking in marketing acumen. I would think that anyone who is selling goods or services that are worth in the many hundreds of not thousands of dollars would pay a little more attention to more targeted marketing (especially those dentists who specialize in cosmetic procedures).
