The Power of The First Sentence

If you ask a web copywriter to show you the most important pieces of the web copy he would tell you that the headline AND the P.S. at the end are the two crucial parts of any ad writing. But does a compelling headline make people read what you have to say? Now comes the power of a great first sentence.
The headline would be the ultimate decision maker for your reader to either glance over the writing or
ignore it. What really motivates people to read is that first sentence.
Have you noticed how the newspapers would start the first word with a huge first letter? That’s your attention grabber that says …. start reading from here.
I actually have implemented the same trick into some of my web copy and you should know this … it worked.
Make sure that your first sentence grabs your reader to read further. I am not talking about novels here. I am talking about your sales letter, website copy, direct mail piece and every writing that has to sell.
Example:
“Oh, how I would love to see your face expression when you finish reading what I have to say here”
That’s a pretty good start, right? Think of a sentence that would grab your prospect’s curiosity and interest as this will either make or break your conversion rate.

Igor, I really think copywriting is an art! It is the art of “getting people to read the next line”
But seriously, I believe that every element of a copy needs to serve a purpose, and while I am no brilliant copywriter, you are right on with this one. The headline gets the person to start reading, but the first line pushes the eyes to the next paragraph.

Anyone who is interested in becoming a better copywriter should check out Gary Halbert website http://www.thegaryhalbertletter.com
I remember printing out his newsletters and reading them during some of my college classes.
