Ads In College Textbooks Paying the Bill?
By Igor Mordkovich on Aug 21, 2006 in Marketing Strategy, General, Traditional Marketing
I recently wrote an article about advertisers going overboard with ads when an article about ads being used on the supermarket conveyor belts was sent to me. In my opinion 1 year after that would be implemented, consumers wouldn’t even notice these ads.
On the other hand … last Friday I read this article about Textbook Ads being placed in college textbooks cutting cost to almost no cost at all. Today college books cost anywhere from $60 to $140 and I think students will be happy to see advertisers paying for the books.
This is something that will work. You know why? Because deep inside they will know who just paid their bill for the book. Another reason is … every time these kids will open the textbook (hopefully they’ll open it more than once in 13 weeks), their eyes will see those ads.
Don’t forget that these are young college kids who are actually pretty open to new brands and are excited to try new things. Great idea.

I really don’t think ads belong in textbooks, but I have no doubt that most college kids (myself included back when I was in college) would have jumped at the chance to get free textbooks in exchange for a bit of advertising. So with that I guess I’m all for this, so long as it stays in the college book. What are the odds that this will creep into High school and Jr. High books? That’s where I would draw the line.
